Ironman Hawaii 2008

AW: Ironman Hawaii 2008

Hi zusammen,

Ab in Hauptbahnhof, da gibts bestimmt WLAN :D.

AW: Ironman Hawaii 2008

00:50 Rhodes fourth out
The first guy in the chase group at the end of the swim was Kiwi Bryan Rhodes. Close to him was Chris McCormack and Craig Alexander.

Others in the group were Torbjorn Sindballe and Faris Al-Sultan.

They are all almost three minutes back.
00:48 Sanson looks like he won the sprint
While Sanson ran up the ramp first, Andy Potts is flying through the transition and appears to be set to lead the way onto the bike.
00:45 Almost into the pier
The three leaders are now into the last few hundred meters. Potts and Sanson appear to be racing for the lead out of the water.
00:40 A swim record?
To get the record he's reportedly after, Benjamin Sanson will have to go quicker than Lars Jorgensen's 46:41 set 10 years ago.
00:36 Kehr leads the way
Gina Kehr appears to now be in the lead in the women's race. We posted a story yesterday about Kehr's stolen bike -- it was recovered in time for the race, luckily enough.
00:33 Sanson and Potts out in front
Benjamin Sanson has chosen not to wear a full swim skin here today, opting instead for just a bottom.

The chase group is being led by Faris Al-Sultan. Swimming close to him are Craig Alexander, Chris Lieto and Torbjorn Sindballe.

00:29 Lead women's group sits in the main pack
Dede Griesbauer (#107) remains in front of the women's race, but all of the women's contenders are together in the huge chase pack that has formed.

Some of the other lead women we're seeing at this point are:
* Gina Ferguson (#118)
* Gina Kehr (#116)
* Virginia Berasategui (#135)
* Hillary Biscay (#158)

00:25 Pete Jacobs the man with the group
Sanson, Potts and Pete Jacobs are the three people out in front -- they have a 100 m lead on the chase pack of about 40.
00:20 Another guess that it's Boecherer
As the three leaders head around the turn boat, we're fairly sure that it's Andreas Boecherer who is swimming with Andy Potts and Benjamin Sanson.

Those three are well ahead, but it looks like the chase pack, which is huge, have gained a bit of time on the three leaders.

What's surprising is that Sanson and Potts are swimming next to each other -- they're not trying to take turns at the front.

00:18 A huge gap opens
Potts and Sanson continue to pull away from the rest of the field. They've got the company of one other swimmer, and the three are pulling away from the rest of the field.

00:15 Potts and Sanson continue to power at the front
Leading the men is Andy Potts (#36), but * Benjamin Sanson (#178) continue to lead the way in the men's race. We think that * Andreas Boecherer (#72) is swimming in third, but that's not confirmed. The 2005 champ, * Faris Al-Sultan (#11), seems to be on form early -- he's leading the group that's chasing the speed demon swimmers. On his feet are * Bryan Rhodes (#35) and an unknown swimmer, followed by Eneko Llanos.

00:14 The age group race is off
The blender in Kailua Bay has just fired up as 1,700 age group athletes have started the swim.
00:14 The women's leaders through the swim
In the lead is Dede Griesbauer (#107), followed by:
* Gina Ferguson (#118)
* Gina Kehr (#116)
* Virginia Berasategui (#135)
* Hillary Biscay (#158)

00:11 Rhodes moves to fifth
Bryan Rhodes is now in fifth place in the men's race, swimming just behind Faris Al-Sultan.

Eneko Llanos is now in seventh place.
00:07 Sanson determined to get the record
The word here in our Ironmanlive room is that Benjamin Sanson is going to do whatever he needs to to be first out of the water today.

Right now he's swimming next to Andy Potts. Behind them we are Faris Al-Sultan, Eneko Llanos. We think that Andreas Boecherer might be swimming in about fifth.
